COB: Plastic Bags

Group pushes for plastic bag ban in Burbank
Task force recommends the city ban their use by retail stores.
Burbank Leader: 7.26.2011 by Maria Hsin

A ban on plastic bags from store checkouts has been recommended by the Sustainable Burbank Task Force.

Councilman Gary Bric, a non-voting council representative to the task force, said the task force recommended the city move forward with a ban.

The county ban went into effect July 1 for stores with gross annual sales of $2 million, or that have at least 10,000 square feet of floor space. Smaller stores in the county must comply by Jan. 1, 2012.

In addition to the plastic bag ban, the county ordinance imposes a 10-cent charge on recyclable paper bags.

Jessica Aldridge, executive director of the Burbank Green Alliance, who attended the task force meeting, said she is supportive of a plastic bag ban. READ MORE !

Economics of Happiness: a one-hour documentary film that explores local solutions to our pressing global problems

The Economics of Happiness demonstrates that millions of people are already engaged in building a better world. The film shows that countless small scale initiatives around the world are exploring potential solutions to the multiple crises we face—climate chaos, economic meltdown, and our own personal suffering such as stress, loneliness, and depression. These initiatives are united around a common cause: rebuilding more democratic, human scale, ecological and local economies – the foundation of an “economics of happiness”.

Industry Watch: Entertainment

Reel Green Workshop: July 11, 2009 from post @ The Glass Girl Blog: July 14, 2009

Reel Green Movement:
Eco-Solutions for the Entertainment Industry

I spent late Saturday afternoon on a very hot stage in Burbank for the REEL GREEN Workshop hosted by the Burbank Green Alliance which does a great job of consistently hosting free workshops to get businesses closer to zero waste. This workshop aimed to bridged the eco-production conversation between both the above the line and below the line players. What are the concerns and solutions that each department has that we can resolve or act on now that will continue to green shoots?

I got the most insight from the break out sessions where everyone in the workshop broke into a smaller group based on their area of interest or expertise: Production, Catering/Craft Service, Electrical/Grip, Costume Design, Set Construction/Design and Special Effects.

Highlights and comments about the featured speakers & break out sessions (with links):

CalMAX: "One business's trash is another business's treasure." Businesses, schools, and nonprofits can utilize CalMAX to search for available and wanted materials. Conserves energy, resources, and landfill space by helping businesses and organizations find alternatives to the disposal of valuable materials or wastes through waste exchange.

Give A Glass: The simplest solution is to serve clean, filtered water direct from your office tap in glass pitchers and glasses.

Zero Waste Food Service - Burbank

Businesses look into going greener
Burbank Leader: 2.04.09 by Tom Risen

BURBANK — The Burbank Green Alliance gathered 130 area businesses and organizations Wednesday at the Buena Vista Library to share eco-friendly solutions and start an industry-wide discussion on how to keep their food service lean and green.

“This is the latest part of the city’s 2008 Sustainability Action Plan. We’re trying to start a discussion with local businesses so we can reach near-zero waste in a few years,” said Kreigh Hempel, recycling coordinator for the city of Burbank and member of the Green Alliance.

The Sustainability Action Plan focuses on seven different urban themes to accomplish 21 specific actions to make Burbank a model of eco-friendly efficiency. The city is currently accepting volunteers to head the Sustainability Task Force, which will be chosen at the end of February to administer direction of the urban environmental effort.

At Wednesday’s gathering, Hempel described the economic merits of reducing waste at a business, such as saving on shipping and handling costs for garbage.
