Business Watch - Warner Bros. Entertainment

Film studio applies green lens: WB works on projects it hopes will make it known as a company conscious of the environment.
Burbank Leader: April 28, 2009 by Christopher Cadelago

Warner Bros. Entertainment, angling to become a trailblazer among major studios when it comes to conserving resources and environmental stewardship, has completed two major projects it hopes will reduce its carbon footprint.

The projects include the first “green” sound stage built by a major studio and a set of hybrid solar panels designed to generate more than 500 kilowatts of energy. They are part of a 16-year environmental initiative program in which Warner Bros. closely examines its business practices with the aim of changing its corporate culture to reflect one of sustainability, said Shelley Billik, vice president of environmental initiatives.

“Our company’s philosophy is that everything that is sustainable is actually good for our business and good for our community,” Billik said. “Despite our size, I think, like all other companies, we have to be creative and leverage our own resources.”

The 21,600-square-foot sound stage, built to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design specifications, is operational and is pending LEED certification. READ MORE !

Earth Day 2009

Earth Day Network's "Green Generation” campaign is a 2-year initiative that will launch in 2009 and culminate on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. Similar to "The Greatest Generation" that confronted the challenge of World War II, who inspired the major societal changes that followed, the Green Generation includes ordinary people who are engaged in individual and collective activities to improve their health, to improve their schools, to participate in building a solution to urgent national and global issues, such as climate change or the world’s water crises.

The "Green Generation" is open to everyone: people of all ages and all nationalities, consumers who are committed to buying green; community leaders who are focused on greening their communities; parents and teachers who work to provide healthy foods and green schools for their children; those who work in green jobs; academics whose research is focused on innovative products and services; scientists and engineers who develop new green technologies; and governments that seek to implement policies and support research that will build a green economy and healthy population, and the religious community who are committed to a vision of a just, sustainable, green planet. Corporations will play a key leadership role in the Green Generation campaign, particularly those that recognize that their future success is tied to sustainable products and socially just endeavors. Burbank Reads: Sustainability Day

Green Reigns on Sustainability Day
Library event hosts a variety of environmentally friendly products and offers tips to create zero waste in the city.
Burbank Leader: April 8, 2009 by Zain Shauk

BURBANK — A plug-in hybrid car, electric bicycles, eco-friendly cleaners and homemade reusable bags were on display for the Buena Vista Library’s sustainability day, where visitors got a range of suggestions for living greener lives.

From recycling tips to lessons on energy-efficient light bulbs, representatives from city departments, local organizations and businesses offered pointers to help residents move toward Burbank’s goal of being a zero-waste city by 2040.

“We’re just trying to get people thinking about everything we do in our life and what can we change to make our planet and our city more sustainable,” said Sharon Cohen, the city’s library services director.

The event was the culmination of the library’s Burbank Reads campaign, which this year encouraged residents to read “Living Like Ed,” a book by author Ed Begley Jr. that includes a series of suggestions on living a more environmentally friendly life, Cohen said.

The library held a series of events during the last month to help residents learn more about the sustainability solutions discussed in the book, but Saturday’s event served as an easy resource for visitors to hear about several easy ways to go green.

City officials answered questions about Burbank’s efforts to become more eco-friendly, which included a campaign to encourage more bike riding and an explanation of the city’s recycling system. READ MORE !

Cool Globes
April 22, 2009 - Mid-August 2009

Cool Globes - Los Angeles debut on Earth Day, April 22 at 11 am
in beautiful Exposition Park. This vibrant, engaging and educational exhibit will feature 50 larger-than-life sculpted globes, each custom-designed by local, national and international artists to showcase a solution to reduce global warming.

Cool Globes: Hot Ideas for a Cooler Planet” is public art with a purpose. Conceived by environmentalist Wendy Abrams who wanted to raise awareness of simple solutions to global warming, the project launched in Chicago in June 2007 with 130 globes, each depicting a solution to global warming. The exhibit received an enormous response from the public and media. In 2008, Cool Globes was on display in Washington, D.C. at the U.S. Botanic Garden, in San Francisco at Crissy Field and in San Diego in Balboa Park, through the generous support of Toyota.
